There are two types of laser trabeculoplasty: argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) and selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT). These procedures both use very focused laser light to treat the drainage canal to lower eye pressure more effectively.
The pressure-lowering effect of laser trabeculoplasty can diminish over time. Up to 50% of patients who undergo these procedures will eventually experience a rise in eye pressure. Because SLT uses lower energy levels than ALT, it is possible for patients to have repeat treatments in the future.
Prior to your procedure, numbing drops are applied to your eye. As you sit facing the laser device, a special lens will be positioned next to your eye. A beam of light is then aimed through the lens and reflected onto the meshwork inside your eye. You may see flashes of bright green or red light. The laser makes several evenly spaced spots that stretch the drainage holes in the meshwork, allowing the fluid to drain better.
If you have glaucoma in both eyes, usually only one eye will be treated at a time. Laser treatments for each eye will be scheduled several days to several weeks apart.
